The unit has four steps, each one related to the pollution levels of a certain country. We built the unit from plywood and sprayed it black and spray the countries' names in a bright orange.

The theory behind the unit is quite simple. Once a member of the audience steps on a plate a frequency is triggered that relates to the pollution of the country they are stepping on. So for example, France's level of pollution was 5.61, meaning it was played back to the audience at 561HZ.

Prior to the week we put the unit into a public space we went to the same space (The Nexus, CIT) and presented the data in a text form and asked the people who took part to answer questions based on a licket scale. A week later we put the unit in and asked the same questions to test against the results we had already gathered. We wanted to see if having people interacte with a musical device that changes the modality of information from text to auditory would help raise people's awareness and concern levels whilst having fun at the same time. We were pretty impressed with the results! Check out the video beneath.
We have been looking at public worldwide data about CO2 emissions online. This graph shown above is information provided by the world bank and graphically illustrated by google which is free to use. This online tool is useful for the project because it allows us to research the amount of CO2 emissions in any country and compare them to other countries. We can use this data to input into our carbon footprint structure which will give audio feedback to the audience in relation to the data shown above. Data like this will also be used throughout the testing stage to gain an understanding of the public's knowledge about worldwide CO2 emissions.

We build it using two beer mats with tinfoil attached to the end of each. Wires are then connected from the tinfoil into a breaker board that is connected to an Arduino board. We designed this prototype as a test to make sure everything was working. We are now going to start to build the actually steps that will be used in our project.
Urban pollution is a major problem across the world. It is an issue that many environment scientists are currently trying to solve. We have choose urban pollution as it is something we both feel passionate about. The aim of our project is to raise people's awareness of urban pollution through a fun interactive experience.

Initial ideas:

After researching and brainstorming our chosen area we came up with an idea that involves using the Hollywood Boulevard idea as the basis to an interactive installation to help raise people's awareness.

The idea was based around making the audience feel 'famous' for a short period of time. That combined with the idea of using your foot (taken from carbon footprint) as the main controller. The audience, one or more, would put their foot onto a pressure sensor that would trigger a camera to take a picture of them. By using a carbon dioxide sensor hooked up to a Audrino board we could have a constant live reading of the carbon levels at the time the picture was taken. This reading will be presented to the audience by using an animated face rather than figures and will show wether the reading was good or bad based on the facial expression of the animation. This face will be imprinted as an info-graphic onto the screen along side the audience to inform them on their carbon footprint. The screen will display all the pictures that have been taken that day. The picture will also be uploaded onto a website that contains all the photos taken, from here the audience can share their photo on Facebook or Twitter. There will also be information sections on the website that help people to understand better what urban pollution is and ways to help bring it down.

This is our first idea. We plan to build on this idea from here and further develop it before we move into prototyping it.

Mark Fitzsimons and Sam Miles. We have four socials issues that we are going to research and then we will chose the issue that we feel we can help the best. The idea behind this project is to use fun as a method to make a noticeable difference, not to try and solve it.

The first issue is air pollution in urban areas

The second issue is texting while driving

The third issue is saving water

The forth issue is to encourage children to was their hands after using the bathroom
